Snooper S2 June 19, 2010 J. R. Jolliffe The best £18 I have spent in a long time.Had a little difficulty at first but this was put down to my front window having a heater band inside it. This is now not a problem you just have to make sure that the unit is insatlled as parallel as posible to the glass.I did contact the manufacturer earlier and they recommended upgrade software. This was free and was easy to do on their web site.I was also offered free down load for life. Really impressed.
Snooper S2 Review March 3, 2010 G. Kendall Smith (Swindon) I was given this as a present. I gave it back because it had no database on it, it was then returned with the database added - not sure how much this cost. It did not work with Windows 7 and I needed to contact Snooper to download a patch.
Having got it installed, it needs a power lead plugged in constantly as it seems to have no battery. Whilst they do supply a permanent 'wired-in' lead this is all further spaghetti for the dashboard.
Using it fresh off an update down the M4 it seems to be about 30% accurate, better at getting the permanent cameras but provides a lot of false warnings and no warnings for the average speed areas. Still picks up on cameras that have been removed over 6 months ago.
The last thing that I remember not liking is the flashing lights that are very bright and distracting at night. There is a dim function but this did not seem to do enough. This very actively displays to the world that you have a camera device. If you place it lower down in the cabin, ie not adjacent to the windscreen the GPS rapidly loses signal.
I believe that Snooper do a range of products. I think I would look for one that has an integral battery, and a digital display of distance to camera and not so many bright lights. Not sure about what to do about the database.
Sorry Snooper - not happy with product at all.

I was initially disappointed to read that you had to buy subscriptions for it as the advert had said not but it turned out that a free lifetime subscription was currently available. Having successfully registered it I tried it out and it failed to detect most speed cameras so I decided to download the updates. This proved somewhat difficult and I had to un-install and re-install the software several times. I e-mailed technical support and got a reasonably helpful response. In the end I had to change a hardware setting in order for it to be recognised but then it said it wasn't registered. I got some helpful advice over the phone to un-install (again) and install from the website rather than from the CD. This worked and it now works pretty well, detecting most speed cameras and some that don't appear to exist! The only other problem was that it initially seem to take ages (half an hour) to lock onto a satellite but it's now a lot better and connects within 5 minutes or just a few seconds from a warm start.
Still undecided... September 26, 2009 R. Adcock 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've had an S2 for a week now and when it works it seems to do the job well. I installed the software and followed the simple instructions to activate the device. I've no idea what the other reviewer meant when he wrote "you have to know how to change the coms settings". That's simply not true! I plugged the S2 into the USB slot and it immediately updated itself, no problem at all. So does it work? Sometimes! Basically there seems to be a problem with it actually finding and staying linked to a satellite. A green light shows when it's connected but it's taken up to 25 minutes of driving for it to connect after being switched on (usually it takes a few minutes) which is ridiculous! My phone GPS doesn't have a problem finding a satellite so I don't know why the S2 does. Another problem is that even when it has connected it will often lose it again and go back to search mode. In my experience so far it's only worked about 60% of the time. That said when I tested it on a local speed camera it did work well and warned me in good time that I was approaching it. I repeated the test several times and it didn't fail to alert me. Anyway I'm going to email Snooper to find out if I should expect a better service than I'm currently getting and if they'll do anything about it.
Also people should be aware that the updates are free for this product now if you buy new and that there is no extra monthly fee to pay.
EDIT: I'm unable to change the star rating but after a few weeks use I'd give this 4 out of 5. It does a decent job for the price.
Appalling device May 26, 2009 A. G. Westerman (wales) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
After damaging my old radar detector, I thought that I'd "upgrade" to GPS detectors. Big mistake! Upgrading involves connecting to the PC but you have to know how to change the coms settings. When I got the device registered the first didn't work correctly, nor the second nor the third! Totally hopeless and since then have had a few others say the same. Wish I'd read the reviews
