 Great device - but too many update problems July 11, 2010

Beware of map update problems ...
Whilst TomTom produce great SatNav software I am extremely dsappointed by the quality of their hardware and UK servicing. My first ONE IQ failed in May after only 5 months usage. TomTom UK replaced the unit with a refurbished one(?) which had clearly seen much heavier usage than the one sent for repair.
Ironically, problems only start to occur on these units whilst plugged into a PC for updates. File corruption, inability to copy on large files and inexplicable time-outs are just some of the issues. Sadly, TomTom clearly see a lot of this as they immediately email voluminous self help instructions on contacting their service department. The instructions take considerable time to plough through and involve formatting the unit. After 5 hours of trying, I was still left with an unuseable device.
My replacement unit failed after a month under the same update conditions (which I tried from 3 different PC's). Adding insult to injury, TomTom bizzarly won't allow you to register a separate device to the account registered with them within a 6 month timescale (eh?) thus preventing customisation of any replacement units.
Great when they work, a tedious and appalling experience when they don't - beware.

I bought this recently and wanted to return it only after 2 weeks.. was too late as the sellers policy has a shorter deadline than Amazon's 30 day. Should have checked that :-(..
anyway.. the TomTom has really slow response time and sometimes loses the signal (when driving in the country or passing close to a boulevard of trees). One day it even lost the signal after a 1 minute tunnel and did not retrieved it anymore (even after 20 minutes).
Was expecting a better Hardware and a better service by the seller.. they said that they would replace it for me but I in fact I rather buy a Garmin or another alternative..
choose Amazon as seller if possible :-)

Bought this as a replacement for a sony sat nav that was years old. What a mistake. When it works it is really great. Its the getting the thing to work that is the hard part. After a short period it seemed to have trouble finding anything or anywhere. Can understand some signal loss and more so in countryside and such but this thing got lost in areas like Cardiff,Bath and Birmingham, not having a clue which city we were in, what street we were on and when i'd had enough of being told i was still in the car park i'd left 20miles ago i managed to pull in, buy a map, find myself, plan a route and get back on the right track before a signal came back.Then telling me to go straight over on many left or right only junctions was the final straw before it went in the glove box for rest of trip. Not of any use at all really compared to other units and a total waste of time and money.

I got a tomtom one IQ after a lot of looking at sat nav's. The problem is it will not update, after just 2 weeks of using it. The USB link as stopped working so I cannot update any software or get any PC detect it, or use the traffic system. Also when the USB did work it took well over two hours to down install and then fail.
I did not expect such an expensive product to fail after just two weeks. Not good. Not good at all.

Great product! easy to use as a first time SatNav person. using it through the french/belgian/german road system was great. we would have been lost without it.
easy to set up routes, travel times were surprisingly good and the smaller screen is easy to read.
75% of the time there was no glare issue but when the sun is on it then it can be hard to read.
voice commands were timely although scared my wife a few times.
Speed camera warning alarm was helpful.
