Brilliant July 27, 2010 A. Roberton (West Wales) One of the best Sat Navs I have ever seen and used. Bigger than a lot of the Sat Navs out there, making it easier for my old eyes to see. It also allows you to link in your mobile, brilliant idea. The best thing about Sat Navs is when you are alone in the care and cannot keep looking at a map - even if there is someone map reading, using the Sat Nav prevents a lot of arguements.
I give the Garmin Nuvi 1490 5 stars, but if I could I would make it 10 - BRILLIANT

Garmin Nuvi - very impressed! July 24, 2010 Roger (U K) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had owned a Tom Tom 700 for several years and because it had been an expensive present from my wife I couldn't justify replacing it. However, it was stolen (not from in the car) so I had to replace it. Both sons had owned Garmins for some time and preferred them to my Tom Tom; the 1490 seemed to do everything that I wanted (and more) and I must say I've not been disappointed:
Thin, lightweight
Wide, clear touch - screen
Spoken street names
Speed camera audible warnings
New screen appears at a junction advising of lane positioning (excellent!)
Visual warning of speeding etc...
Full instructions need to be downloaded as a pdf and need close scrutiny - there are many features which at first, I didn't find instinctively. The screen layout can be changed, and a full readout of your planned journey in text or on a map is there. I'd recommend that you update maps immediately from the Garmin site (very easy) and also install a copy of Mapsource on your PC - this enables you to plan your journey in its entirety at your leisure, and then upload it to the GPS.
Touching the screen (which needs pressure, unlike the capacitance-type screen on the Tom Tom) brings up all sorts of sub-menus, and with a bit of trial and error becomes easy to use.
My only criticism (purely personal taste) is that the icons are a bit cartoon-like - I would prefer a cleaner, more business-like design.
Garmin nuvi 1490 Sat Nav July 22, 2010 Mrs. S. Welsh (Scotland, UK)
Bought this to replace an older version Navman Sat Nav system. We were really impressed with the large 5" touchscreen.
The system is very easy to use and allows you to enter full postcodes. It also has a large pre-loaded list of services/amenities (shops, restaurants, hospitals, etc).
The eco function seems a bit gadgety, it gives you a rating out of 100 on how economical you are driving.
The system has a bluetooth function which allows you to use your mobile phone handsfree.
All in all a great sat nav which is easy to use.
GPS navigation for dummies July 22, 2010 Dr. Bryan C. Lindley (Cumbria UK) The Garmin 1490T worked perfectly straight from the box, up and running immediately, and has performed admirably on a number of journeys since new. It replaced a built-in system in a 2006 BMW 330d 'controlled' by iDrive which is totally frustrating and difficult to use (BMW has since modified). We now very successfully use the Garmin in both BMWs we own, and are recommending it to friends who refuse to buy expensive built-in systems.
